Contact Lens Online

Soft contact lenses have been released in many different formats since they were first developed in the 1960s.

Soft contact lenses were originally designed to be worn for 12 to 18 months and removed nightly. These contact lenses are now called "conventional soft contact lenses". They are usually prescribed as a specialty lens and are generally used when frequent replacement or disposable contact lenses are not available. They have the disadvantage of being more expensive and tend to accumulate surface deposits. This mode of lens wear requires more diligence with cleaning and care.

Disposable contact lenses were first released commercially in the 1980s. The first disposable lens was the Johnson and Johnson Acuvue contact lens, which was a 2 week disposable contact lens. It was a soft hydrogel lens and was primarily worn on a daily basis. The original Acuve contact lenses has only recently been discontinued. It was designed to be replaced after 2 weeks of daily wear.

Soft disposable silicon hydrogel contact lenses were first available in the 1990s. The first silicon hydrogel lenses offered were the B&L PureVision and Ciba Focus night & Day lens. Both these lenses are approved for one month extended wear. Silicon hydrogel contact lenses have the advantage of greater oxygen permeability then the original hydrogel contact lenses. Approximately 98% of patients are able to wear this type of contact lens. There is however, a slightly increased chance of developing microbial keratitis or corneal ulcer with this mode of wear. Some studies place the risk at one in five hundred per wearing year.

The next generation of silicon hydrogel soft disposable contact lenses saw the release of Ciba Optix O2 and Johnson and Johnson Acuvue Oasys. These lenses have an improved surface treatment, which leads to improved hydration and increased comfort.

More recently daily disposable soft hydrogel contact lenses have become increasingly popular. These lenses, such as J&J 1-day Acuvue Moist and CibaVision Focus Dailies have the advantage of being more hydrophilic and retaining moisture during the day.

Focus Dailies contact lenses contain AquaRelease to improve hydration and are replaced daily, leading to increased comfort from a cleaner lens. Daily replacement lenses also have the advantage of lower complication rates due to the lenses developing less surface deposits and lower infection rates. Obviously a contact lens case is superfluous with this mode of lens wear. Contact lens cases have been found to be a major source of microbes that can cause eye infections.

Contact lenses are now also available to buy online, meaning a faster, cheaper and more convenient alternative in purchasing your lenses. Contact lens wearers should still maintain a responsible attitude to lens wear, and have their eyes checked regularly by their eyecare practitioner. They should also check their own eyes daily for eye infections, by following the "Look OK, See OK, Feel OK" regime. Each morning after inserting the lenses they should check each eye look white, then check the vision in each eye separately, and then blink once or twice and ensure there is no discomfort. If there is any change, they should remove the lenses immediately and consult their eye care practitioner.

Glow in the dark contact lens is also now available in the market. They are an innovation when it comes to special effect contact lens.

The usual type of contact lens just either help enhance the eye's natural color or bring it out with the use of other eye colors. Some can also create illusions with the use of extraordinary colors such as yellow and red. Some go as far as placing shapes on contact lenses to create the illusion of a magical pupil or something otherworldly. However, glow in the dark contact lens put all those innovation into a whole new level.

The glow in the dark contact lens is generally used for theatrical purposes. Those who wanted to create a spookier costume presentation for Halloween would also benefit a lot from using glow in the dark contact lens. Once worn, it definitely calls for attention and therefore produces a lot of audience impact.

These contact lenses can be further customized to illuminate different images in the lens itself to make them more unique. It can also be built within shapes to create a more awesome look. No matter how innovating the designs or shapes maybe, they can still amaze those people who have tried them on. The only thing the wearer should keep in mind is that it must be relative dark in order to see the full effects to the glowing lens.

So what's the trick behind that glow in the dark look? This type of contact lens makes use of luminescent material which is safely placed on its surface. However, in choosing a lens with specifications like this, it is important to look at its accreditation. It is highly advisable to use only those which colors are approved by the FDA. Make sure your eye doctor gives his or her approval before trying on an unknown brand of specialty contact lenses.

In addition, this type of lens should also be purchased with proper prescription. It is important to consult a licensed optometrist first before availing one. As soon as you get an approval to wear a theatrical contact lens, the next important thing to do is find a reliable contact lens seller. This is important so that the quality of lens is ensured. Also, it's very appropriate to buy only those which have proven their name over the years since there's additional material being placed on this lens' surface which is not a simple process.

Some brands of glowing contact lenses are not recommended to be worn while driving at night. Apparently the glare of oncoming vehicle headlights have cause some people to have vision problems. Again talk to your eye doctor if you have any questions as any possible limitations that may be involved with wearing theatrical contact lenses.

It is strongly recommended that this type of contact lens should be used by only one wearer. This is not intended for borrowing because that would be very unhygienic and potentially dangerous to the eyes. Your Glow in the dark contact lens should also be taken cared of and cleaned just like any normal contact lenses. Failure to do so may lead to serious consequences.

Eye Surgery Costs

Being a contact lens wearer can be quite a hassle. You have to buy, maintain and replace your contacts plus have annual eye tests. If you're looking for an alternative you may find that either a 30-day contact lens is the solution or you may find that corrective eye surgery is the only way forward. Although both methods are great, they also have some disadvantages. So make sure you understand the pros and cons of each before you make a decision.

Advantages of 30-day Continuous Wear Contact Lenses

Quick - You will notice an improvement in your vision the moment you place the contacts in. If you find them at all uncomfortable it's probably because you've been given the wrong prescription. All you have to do to rectify the problem is to go back to your optician.

Low Cost - These lenses do not cost a fortune and there's no need to take out a loan to finance them. When you have worn them for 30 days all you have to do is dispose of them and buy new ones. This means you won't have to have so much in the way of cleaning products. However it's still recommended that you keep a bottle of cleaner to hand.

New Technology - The silicone hydrogel which is used to make these lenses are much more efficient at allowing oxygen into the eye. Your eyes will stay much healthier and irritation-free.

If a recent eye examination shows you need to change your prescription this is a very easy process.

Disadvantages of 30-day Continuous Wear Contact Lenses

Even though technology has come a long way, you may find that sleeping with your contact lenses in is a bit uncomfortable. If this is the case they may not be the best choice. You also have an increased chance of getting an infection if lenses are worn while you sleep.

Because your eyes can change over the years it's strongly advisable to keep going for annual eye examinations to make sure your prescription is still valid.

Advantages of LASIK Eye Surgery

Success rates are now very high for LASIK operations. Technology, training and experience have improved a great deal over the years. In most cases people completely restore their vision to 20/20 or even better. The results are also long-lasting.

The results you get from LASIK are pretty much immediate and a lot of patients can drive home after the operation.

Disadvantages of LASIK eye surgery

Costs are significant with surgery. It costs generally around $2,000 an eye so you may have to take out a loan. Talk to your surgeon to see if there are any financing options available.

Like any other surgery, LASIK is not guaranteed and mistakes can, and sometimes do, happen. Some patients don't see improvements or suffer side effects such as the appearance of spots, glare and dry eyes.

Also some people aren't eligible for surgery because the health of their eyes aren't up to scratch or they are generally not in good health.

Although surgery is long lasting, you may still need to wear prescription glasses in years to come as presbyopia becomes an issue.

Also make sure you attend regular eye examinations.

Contact Lens Price

For the last three years I've been wearing the 1 Day Acuvue Contact Lens.  Now I've been wearing contacts for about thirty years so contacts aren't new to me.  But a 1 day lens was a new idea.  Frankly, I thought it was crazy.  The whole idea of throwing contacts away after only wearing them one day made no sense to me.  But I went along with the eye doctor and I learned.  See, fresh lenses every day and no maintenance has some real advantages.  Here are a few...

Fresh lenses every day give you that new lens vision every day.  Over time contacts just get dirty.  It may be from actual dirt or built up of proteins or other stuff, but older lenses don't give you the same vision as perfectly clean, new lenses.  Fresh lenses give sharp vision.  There's this too...

No cleaning.  That means no chemicals to buy and keep up with.  It also means no time spent on cleaning, disinfecting and all the other maintenance that usually goes along with wearing contacts.  Between the chemicals and the time saved, that may be a quite large saving.  Clean, fresh lenses do more too...

Because dirty lenses and lots of handling may lead to eye irritation or worse.  Eye infections arise from those dirty lenses too.  With fresh clean lenses every day, there's much less chance of any eye infection.  What's that worth?  Maybe quite a lot if you develop eye problems.

So it's just a lot more convenient and much less trouble if you use 1 Day contacts compared to lenses you wear longer.

Then there's the comfort issue too.  Now I've worn both the 1 Day models, but not every other Acuvue lens.  I can say based on my experience that these are the most comfortable lenses I've used.  I know the lenses are high in moisture.  In fact, they are mostly water.  But, I'm not sure just why they feel comfortable for long days.  The Moist version seems to be even better on my dry eyes.

The advantages of the 1 Day lenses come with a price.  If you wear contacts every day, you'll use a lot of lenses.  Then again, maybe you don't wear contacts every day.  In either case, the lenses actually cost less per lens than the one or two week lenses.  It's just that you use more lenses.  The higher cost for the lenses is offset some since you don't need any kinds of chemicals and that's a savings.

The 1 Day Acuvue Contact Lens is just right for my needs.  You wear new lenses every day and don't have to ever clean and disinfect lenses.  That makes it a lot more convenient and less trouble.  The extra cost of lenses is somewhat offset since you don't need all the chemicals.

Soft contact lenses have been released in many different formats since they were first developed in the 1960s.

Rgp Contact Lens

You'll want to take simple precautions to make any lens purchase safe and effective. Before you buy contact lenses from anyone other than your eye care professional, it pays to be a wise consumer. There are 75 million contact lens wearers worldwide and 31 million in the U.S. alone.

Always buy from a reputable company; you can buy discount contact lenses without a prescription, but the company is selling you a prescription device as if it were an over-the-counter device, in violation of FTC regulations - selling you lenses without having a prescription from you. Among the many kinds of contact lenses you can buy are: novelty, colored, crazy, Halloween, special effects, theatrical, costume, scary, glow in the dark, wild eyes, mirrored, black, white, and red.

Soft lenses are easier to adjust and are much more comfortable than rigid lenses, because they conform to the eye and absorb and hold water. Although easier to handle and less likely to tear, rigid gas permeable lenses are not as comfortable initially as soft contacts and it may take a few weeks to get used to wearing the RGPs, compared to just a few days for soft contacts. There are also a few rigid gas permeable lenses that are designed and approved for overnight wear.

Rigid lenses generally give you more clear vision. The expiration date for your prescription is currently set by your state requiring a one-year or two-year renewal; if your state hasn't set a minimum expiration date, government regulation sets a one-year date unless your eye doctor determines there's a medical reason for less than one year. Rigid gas permeable lenses tend to be less expensive over the life of the lens since they last longer than soft lenses.

There are differences in the water content and shape of the lens between different brands. While the ability to hold water increases the oxygen permeability of soft lenses, it increases their fragility quotient as well. Rigid lenses don't absorb chemicals, unlike soft lenses which will soak up residue from your hands like soap or lotion.

The length of continuous lens wear depends on the lens type and your doctor's evaluation of your tolerance for overnight wear. Some doctors prescribe disposables as planned-replacement lenses, which are removed, disinfected, and reused before being discarded.

Check to see if you have a health insurance plan that includes vision coverage. Focus on value, not just the price; most people looking for the best price are really looking for the best value. Get a feel for how the retailer handles customer service calls; in case you have a problem after your order arrives.

Carefully check to make sure the company gives you the exact brand you ordered, the name of the lens, the power, sphere, cylinder, if any, axis, if any, diameter base curve, and peripheral curves, if any. Make sure you have a current, valid prescription when you order contact lenses. When you place your contact lens order, request the manufacturer's written patient information for your contact lenses; it'll give you important risk and benefit information as well as instructions for use.

Always ask what rebates are available. You can buy contact lenses from an eye doctor, on the Internet, from an optical store or a warehouse club. Ask about prices at your doctor's office when you have your eye examination, or during a follow-up visit after you get your prescription.

Extended-wear rigid lenses can cause unexpected, undesirable, reshaping of the cornea. The most serious safety concern with any contact lens is from overnight use. Getting a proper fit is essential; contact lenses that are poorly fitted can lead to eyesores, eye inflammation, and eye abrasions.

Soft extended-wear lenses bind down on the closed eye, but they are porous and allow some tears through during sleep; because they have so little form, their binding has very little effect on the shape of the eye. Don't wear lenses any longer than they're prescribed for, nor when sleeping unless you are otherwise directed. Daily-wear lenses are removed daily for cleaning and are a safer choice, provided they aren't worn during sleep.

If you're looking for cheap contact lenses, you may find that cheap materials or other ways of cutting costs will affect the quality you'll want for your precious eyes. Make sure to visit a reputable eye doctor for a complete eye examination once a year, or more frequently if needed. Laser surgery and its risks can be frightening and too expensive for some people; contacts can provide a safe, comfortable and time-tested alternative.
