Contact lenses nowadays have become the popular solution for vision correction especially for the young and trendy. Though glasses are still massively produced and used worldwide; contact lenses have become the better alternative especially for those who love sports and physical activities.

Many also choose to wear contacts as they provide more comfort and less hassle in daily wear and clothing other than some physical activities that might restrict those with glasses or spectacles.

Though LASIK or laser eye surgeries are available in urban cities across the globe and offer one time solution for vision problems, contact lenses still have the upper hand as the consumers' choice for having far lesser risk and cheaper in cost. With the demand increase in today's market, mass-produced contact lenses are getting cheaper with various types and styles to offer.

Cheap contact lenses are available especially in superstores and on-line eyewear traders and they come in so many colours and patterns to choose that people even prefer them for style and beauty. Glasses are also very stylish nowadays but putting on a glass on your face will obviously change your looks and it needs great care so that your activities wouldn't cause it to break.

Another common experience of many from wearing high power glasses continuously are eye strain that affects the looks of your eyes and your whole face. In other words, you can easily detect that a person wears glasses even when he or she is not wearing them. Thus, cheap contact lenses are still the choice for many who would like to avoid these issues.

There a few ways to get cheap contact lenses or to find great discounts and offers for them. You can check on-line price comparison websites for information and reviews to help you choose not only the best price but also type and brand. Nevertheless, many of these sites are revenue driven and might not give you the whole picture of what's available in the market, so try doing a little research on many sites rather than just one for best results.

Buying from superstores' opticians or vision centres is also a good idea as they usually sell cheaper contact lenses with their own brand name. Plus, you can get them while doing your other shopping which won't only save you money but also your precious time.

So if you're still in search for comfortable vision solution that's affordable yet stylish, cheap contact lenses would be the answer for you. Browse the web and check them out in your favourite superstores for a better vision and an affordable living.

If you are dependent on glasses or contact lenses, you may wonder if laser eye surgery is an option for everyone. Many people today are rushing out and finding an eye surgery so they no longer have to wear corrective lenses, however, if you are not a good candidate for the procedure you may soon learn that the complications are not worth the risk.

Before you make that decision, you should look at everything that is involved including the number one thing to know. Is the eye doctor licensed to perform laser eye surgery? There are not as many licensed ophthalmologist as you might think. Ask to see the certificate to ensure they know what they are doing and learn how many times they have performed the procedure. It would also be in your best interest to find out how many times they have performed the procedure with blades and without blades.

Learn what risks are involved and if your own expectations will be met with laser eye surgery. Many people that have this procedure learn that they still have to wear glasses for night vision among a few other vision problems. Just because this procedure helps you to see clearer, does not mean that you will have 20/20 vision. Be prepared for less than perfect vision.

Laser eye surgery is expensive; however, if you divide it out over the years it will amount to less than purchasing glasses or contacts each and every year. Talk with your insurance carrier, in some cases; they will cover part of the costs.

Individuals under the age of 18 cannot have laser eye surgery. The eyes are still developing and do not have refractive stability yet. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, persons with diabetes, or those taking medications that cause variations in vision are not good candidates for this procedure.

The best way to learn if you are a good candidate is to discuss this with your health care provider before you visit your eye doctor or ophthalmologist. Individuals that have conditions such as shingles or herpes around the eyes should give this important information to the eye doctor as well as any other health problem associated with the eyes such as any eye disease, ocular hypertension, glaucoma, keratoconus, or other eye surgeries.

Just remember, laser eye surgery is surgery! With all surgeries, even elective surgeries there can be complications such as infection and other diverse reactions. The best thing to do is to discuss your expectations and your concerns with your doctor and your ophthalmologist.

Many people are talking about LASIK this and LASIK that, but you don't understand what LASIK is? If you are wearing contact lenses or glasses, probably you might be interested in LASIK. LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is a type of eye surgery to reshape cornea and improve your visual acuity. With LASIK eye surgery, many people have achieved better vision without having to wear glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK eye surgery uses laser beams to remove the corneal tissue without disturbing nearby cells. Before that, a hinged corneal flap is created with microkeratome blade or laser (IntraLase method) and after the underlying corneal tissue has been removed, the corneal flap is repositioned. The flap will stick to the underlying cornea on its own and heals quickly. It is a painless procedure because the LASIK surgeon will use anesthetic eye drops to numb your eye. You may feel a little uncomfortable because your eyelids are secured with a small instrument to keep your eye wide open during the LASIK eye surgery.

LASIK eye surgery has been the most popular eye surgery these days because the cornea healing with LASIK procedure is faster and less painful than other eye surgeries, such as PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy). It has been performed on more than one million people in the world. In the United States, the practice of LASIK surgery is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including the approval of all medical devices used for the procedure, especially the lasers used for LASIK. However, FDS does not have the authority to set the price for LASIK, recommend any LASIK surgeons or clinics or laser centers or provide ratings of lasers approved for the LASIK procedure.

However, not every eye problems can be treated with LASIK eye surgery. LASIK eye surgery is for people with common vision problems as follows: - Nearsightedness (myopia)

People who are near-sighted are only able to clearly see things near them and things that are far away may seem blur to them. - Farsightedness (hyperopia)

People who are far-sighted cannot see near things clearly but able to see clearly things that are far away. - Astigmatism

People with astigmatism are difficult to see things clearly at any distance because of irregularities in the cornea or the lens of the eye.

It can also treat people with a combination of above problems, such as myopia and astigmatism or hyperopia and astigmatism.

LASIK cannot correct or prevent presbyopia, which is a type of vision problem in people at the age of 40 or older. This means that if you have had LASIK surgery, you still have to wear bifocal glasses when you already have presbyopia.

So, if you are really interested in LASIK to eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses, consult with your doctor to determine if you are eligible for LASIK or not and make sure you know the risks and complications that LASIK eye surgery may cause. Comprehensive eye examinations, using a number of medical equipments will be taken and a few questions will be asked before you can undergo LASIK.

Lasik eye surgery is the most advanced laser procedure that can be performed on the eyes. It can correct several common eye defects such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This eliminates the need to wear clunky spectacles or even contact lenses. Lasik eye surgery can give you greatly improved eyesight and even up to a 20/20 vision.

This procedure makes use of special laser that directly treats the cornea and corrects the abnormality.

First, the surgeon will slice off a thin flap in the cornea, and then use a special laser to reshape the cornea. The flap is then returned, and should heal in about an hour.

This procedure can be done all in the span of around 10 to 15 minutes per eye, and involves minimal pain or discomfort to the patient.

This quick and easy-to-do nature of this operation has naturally made this very popular, even among those who are normally reluctant to go under any kind of surgery.

There are now many Lasik eye surgery centers making this procedure easily available to everyone.

The cost of Lasik eye surgery can range anywhere from $500 to $5,500 per eye and the average cost is about $2000. The prices can vary depending on the region and the reputation of the surgeon performing the operation. The equipment that the center uses is also a factor. Those opting for custom Lasik should expect to pay $200 to $400 more.

It's important to be cautious of advertisements offering low-cost Lasik surgery. Surgeons advertising Lasik for less than $1000 per eye are probably of substandard quality or these offers actually contain many additional hidden fees. These can include things like consultation fees and essential follow-up care.

They might also require special requirements or are only applicable to certain circumstances. When all these hidden costs are added up, the overall price of these low cost operations might even surpass that of other Lasik eye surgeons, that openly includes these expenses in their evaluation.

There are things to consider when choosing a Lasik eye surgeon. Be sure to make sure to have all the necessary information regarding the surgeon performing the operation, the price of the operation and what this price covers. Be sure to make all the necessary inquires. This is especially true for those advertising discounted Lasik surgery.

Be sure to ask if there are any additional charges for further enhancement surgeries and follow-up care.

Ask how many follow up visits will be made. Centers only offering one or two are follow up visits or ask for an additional fee per visit are discouraged.

Any necessary medical enhancements should be covered for up to 1 year after the surgery. If not, be sure to be aware of any additional charges that are to be made.

Find out the cost of the medication needed. This includes painkillers, etc. Also special protective goggles or glasses might be needed as well.

If you are considering Lasik eye surgery it is important to remember to prioritize the safety of your eyes over the potential cost. Although minimal, there is a risk involved with undergoing any surgery. It is advisable to choose a reputable eye surgeon who's done at least 1000 successful Lasik eye surgeries, even if it might cost more, to minimize the risk of complications occurring.

Most Lasik eye center offer very reasonable payment plans, so that anyone can get Lasik surgery and pay for it in a way that works for them.

Lasik eye surgery is a refractive surgical procedure that works wonders on the eyes of people suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. It reduces a person's complete dependency on glasses and contact lenses. The full form of Lasik is Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that involves permanently changing the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye using an excimer laser.

How is Lasik surgery done?

The surgery should be done with great skill as it involves the most delicate part of human body. It is done with a knife called microkeratome and is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is done at one end of this flap and then the flap is folded back revealing the stroma, which is the middle section of the cornea. Instant pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap can be easily replaced.

How is Lasik advantageous over other surgical procedures?

Lasik eye surgery is quite advantageous over other surgery procedures because they often involve much less pain as an aftermath. Lasik unlike other eye surgeries also promise extremely good vision that can be achieved almost immediately or at least by the next day.

What to do in Lasik eye surgery?

But before you go for the Lasik surgery, you should have a proper test done by your physician. The optician will examine your eyes to determine their health, analyze the kind of visual correction needed and determine how much Lasik ablation is required. Risks like losing vision, developing debilitating visual symptoms, severe dry eye and large refractive errors are often associated with Lasik eye surgeries. So you consult a proper eye surgeon for the best results.

Once you are confident about undergoing the Lasik eye surgery you should follow certain rules to get quick results from the surgery.
Following is a brief history of what should be done before, during and after Lasik:

Before surgery

§ Stop wearing soft contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses and hard lenses.
§ Do not feel pressurized by your doctor, friends and family
§ Stop using creams, lotions, perfumes and make-ups.
§ Keep removing all debris and residues from the eye surfaces.

During surgery

§ Apply a numbing drop to your eye that will clean the area around your eye and create a numb feeling near your eyes.
§ Wear the shield that holds the flaps in places. Wear it to prevent any sudden accidents or getting hit in your eyes.

After surgery

§ Consult your doctor immediately in case of any itching, eye irritation, mild pain or sudden discomfort.
§ Use eye drops given by the doctor to prevent infections or inflammations.
§ Never wear contact lenses at least for next fortnight.

Lasik eye surgery is hassle-free but you should take proper care for your eyes. In spite of such care, if you face any worsening symptoms you should immediately contact your doctor to prevent any further eye-related problems.

Fundamental of LASIK Eye Surgery is an article which can provide people an overall process of LASIK Eye Surgery. It is also a kind of medical treatment of eyes to eliminate the errors of patient which is related with their vision that may be myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. LASIK stands for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK Eye Surgery is not for every problem of eye but only for the vision problem like for the farsightedness or nearsightedness that means the people who are not able to see the clear image of distant object they will be able to see them clear and the people who are not able to see the clear image of close to object they will be able to see them clear.

Cause of vision problem:-

As a fact, the ability of vision of an individual depends on her or his cornea which focuses the light on the retina of eye to structure the figure of any object.  It works exactly like a camera. When the shape of cornea gets little flawed due to gathering of many dead tissues over the cornea of eye, it causes the defect in the focusing ability of eye. To cover these fault the people used glasses and contact lenses but  some people thought that these decreases the value of their face and want to get released form these. For them LASIK Eye Surgery is a convenient substitute to take their specs and lenses away from their eyes.

Procedure of LASIK Eye Surgery:-

As above clarify that during this surgery the surgeons take out the dead tissues that assembles on the cornea of patient’s eye. Usually the surgeons use laser rays to remove these, devoid of disturbing the neighboring cells of the eye.  LASIK Eye Surgery is almost painless and faster than any other eye surgeries procedure because the surgeons make use of painkiller drops to numb the eye of the patient. The patients who are getting operated with LASIK Eye Surgery they gain much improvement in their vision just within sometime of surgery.

For minimum risks and complications:-

Unlike any other surgeries, LASIK Eye Surgery also contains some risks and complications too. So it is important for patient that they choose a well qualified and experienced surgeon for LASIK Eye Surgery and before you deciding for LASIK Eye Surgery consult with the surgeons or your family doctor to get aware with all the risk factors of LASIK Eye Surgery.

Eye Surgeries
Are Lasiks or Laser Eye Surgeries going to replace Optometrists?

I am interested in becoming an optometrist but my parents think that most people will turn to surgeries rather than eyeglasses and contact lenses in the future. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but don't optometrists also treat diseases?

Not all people are candidates for laser surgery, so optometry will always be a second option.

Besides, you can gear your training toward therapeutic optometry. These are practitioners who are recognized as being able to diagnose and treat medical conditions of the eye such as dry eye syndrome, visual field defects, etc. Thus they are not pigeon-holed to just glasses and contacts.

And in some states, there is regulation being attempted to actually allow optometrist to perform laser surgery (ie Texas). So it is a field that is changing along with the technology.

Has anyone had CK eye surgery to restore functional near vision?

I have seen advertisements for this and am curious...what does it cost? Recuperation time? Painful? Do you need reading glasses AT ALL after this surgery?
Clarification: From what I understand, this surgery is not LASIK. It's supposedly done with radio wave frequency. I know a lot about LASIK...this is something different entirely and relatively new here in Fresno, California. Anyone know anything about CK?

Conductive Keratoplasty (Refractec, Inc. Irvine, CA ) builds upon the principles of thermokeratoplasty, using radiofrequency (RF) energy to reshape the cornea and therefore adjust its refractive characteristics. CK may be performed for low to moderate hyperopia (between +0.75 and +3.00 diopters). To perform the procedure, a handpiece with a Keratoplast Tip delivers controlled RF energy directly to the corneal stroma in a ring pattern. Conductive Keratoplasty creates a purse-string effect that steepens the central cornea through a ring of application spots around the periphery of the cornea.

CK leads one to have functional near vision by creating 'Monovision'. Monovision is a method of presbyopic correction whereby the dominant eye is usually corrected for distance vision and the nondominant eye corrected for near. Monovision can be achieved using many techniques of which Conductive keratoplasty is one. Monovision can be achieved by either CK or Lasik.

Please remember an important point. Presbyopes cannot have perfect distance vision as well as perfect near vision simultaneouly in the same eye. Meaning - if distance vision in one eye is good then near vision will be bad, and conversely if near vision is good then distance vision will be bad. That is why the strategy of Monovision is used in CK. So one eye is treated to be really good for distance and the other eye is better for near. Working together both eyes give good 'functional vision' at most distances. This functional vision is neither perfect for distance nor perfect for near. Therefore, there may be a need to supplement vision with glasses.

Lasek Laser Eye Surgery

Who would have thought that a man without legs can walk again? Yes, with articial implants, a person who has lost both legs can still walk today. That's the wonder of modern science. The same goes for those who have bad eyesight. Corrective laser eye surgeries can help you see clearly without the need for eye glasses or contact lenses anymore. Although this does not mean that the blind can see, it is still a miracle of sorts.

When we talk laser eye surgery, we usually think LASIK (Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) but there are also other refractive eye surgery such as : -

1) Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) - laser is used to remove tissue found in the surface of the cornea, which is the cause of vision problems.

2) Conductive Keratplasty (CK) - a small probe the size of one strand of hair is used to change the shape of the cornea by shrinking the surrounding tissues.
3) LASEK(Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis), which is a hybrid of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and LASIK.

Whatever it is, laser eye surgery will help people who have astigmatism, near or farsightedness, see better.

Due to surging demand, the price for these procedures has gone up in recent years. A reason for the huge demand is the benefits of having good eyesight without the use of cumbersome glasses. A survey of more than 3 million Americans who have had laser surgery claim to live a better life after the operation.

These benefits of corrective laser eye surgeries are :-

i) ability to see well without the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses

ii) makes one look better, thus improving self confidence and esteem

iii) can perform better in certain sporting and other physical events

iv) ability to see clearly when waking up from a nap or after good night's sleep

v) can treat eye dieseases like glaucoma, presbyopia, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

vi) no maintenance needed

If you have to wear glasses daily, you will no doubt want to get rid of it. Imagine being able to see thing clearer and not get blurred vision without something hanging on your nose and ears. Even being able to go for a relaxing swim and not bump into something or someone accidentally. Laser eye surgery can make this a reality for you.

Before going for a laser eye surgery, you will be examined by a doctor who will find out the extent of work that needs to be done on your eye. This usually take less than 5 minutes, that's it. And the good thing is that almost anyone can quality for such procedures.

During the operation, you will not experience any pain since anesthesia will be used. However, the doctor will probably prepare you for any case of itchiness post operation. Some people have the urge to scratch when it itches. This should be avoided so that there will not be any disruption in the healing process that will happen after a few days.

If you are suffering from bad eyesight, it may be time to seriously consider laser eye surgery to remove the need for glasses or contact lenses. Depending on your problems, your doctor may perform LASIK, LESEK, PRK or CK on you. But it is a relatively minor operation and you should be able to return to work after the procedure.

Refractive Eye Surgery

Any surgery that is performed for the improvement of the refractive state of the eye is called refractive eye surgery. The common objective of all refractive eye surgeries is to eliminate the need of wearing corrective eye glasses or lenses on the part of the patient.

Some common visual disorders that can be cured with refractive eye surgery include myopia and astigmatism. Due to the high prevalence of such eye diseases, a very high number of refractive eye surgeries are regularly performed in the United States and other parts of the world.

Methods of Refractive Eye Surgery
The process of this type of surgery involves remodeling the cornea of the eye. The most common technique in use these days involves an excimer lasers for reshaping of the curvature of the cornea. Some of the common methods of refractive eye surgery include:

* Flap Procedures: A blade called microkeratome is used in these surgeries to cut a flap of corneal tissue. Lasik or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is the most common example of this procedure which uses an excimer laser to target the desired tissue.

* Surface Procedures: Some common surgeries performed under this method include Photrefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelium Keratomileusis (LASEK). These surgeries also involve the use of laser, however they do not require making a cut into the stroma of the eye.
* Corneal Incision Procedures: Radial Keratotomy (RK) is an example of surgery using this method. In this method a diamond knife is used for correcting the shape of the cornea. This surgery is used to common problems of eye such as myopia and astigmatism are cured. However, this method is mostly being replaced by methods which use an excimer laser.

Precautions and Risks in Refractive Eye Surgery
It’s true that refractive eye surgery is a modern and efficient method of correcting vision defects, however it is not suitable for every one. If you are a victim of common diseases such as diabetes or glaucoma then the refractive surgery would not be suitable for you. You should also avoid this type of surgery if you are a pregnant or have certain eye diseases involving retina or cornea defects.
