Contact Lens Prescription

Are you about to venture into the world of wearing contacts? Many people in need of corrective lenses choose to wear contact lenses because of the comfort and an aversion to looking awful with glasses. Glasses slip down your nose, weight on your ears and nose, and have glare problems with light. You also have to have special lenses or an extra pair to keep the sun from blinding you when wearing glasses. A contact lens allows you to get rid of this paraphernalia and simply have corrected vision. Most individuals won't even realize you are wearing a contact lens because they are virtually impossible to see in your eye.

Contact lenses have changed since the 50's. A hard contact lens was the first lens to be made. This type of contact lens was made of a glass material making it very rigid and very uncomfortable for your eye. Most individuals felt glasses were the only way to go because of the uncomfortable material and expense. After all it was very easy to scratch your eye with a hard contact lens when trying to get it out because of the rigidity of the material. Soon glass material was replaced with a polymer based product making contact lenses a little more comfortable; however the restricted oxygen flow to the cornea was causing eye sight problems like blindness in individuals who wore contacts for several years.

We now have a silicon hydrogel contact. This is known as a soft contact lens. The material is like plastic and conforms to the eye easier than their counterparts. It is also thinner. This thinner material tends to tear easily, but gives more comfort to your eye. It is an almost weightless material so your eye will barely feel its presence.

With the introduction of the silicon hydrogel contact lens we also have the introduction of more color contact lenses available. You may have seen some one with violet, jade, yellow or red eyes. The color contact lenses are available to create whatever effect you wish to, however there are downsides. The color contact lens tends to restrict oxygen flow when you have these type of opaque lenses because the material is a little heavier to create the affect.

Your contact lens is created to fit your eye. An eye care specialist will measure your eye to get the correct lens ordered to fit your eye. This is why most individuals with higher prescriptions tend to wait a week or more for their contact lenses to arrive. You can also have corrective lenses for astigmatisms or bifocal contact lenses. The Toric lenses are weighted at the bottom to keep the contact on your eye and eliminate the blurriness created by the astigmatism. The bifocal contact lens is available for those who need an adjustment for near and farsightedness and don't want glasses. Your eye care professional will make sure you have the right prescription for your contact lens.

Eye Contact Lens

Soft contact lenses have been released in many different formats since they were first developed in the 1960s.

Soft contact lenses were originally designed to be worn for 12 to 18 months and removed nightly. These contact lenses are now called "conventional soft contact lenses". They are usually prescribed as a specialty lens and are generally used when frequent replacement or disposable contact lenses are not available. They have the disadvantage of being more expensive and tend to accumulate surface deposits. This mode of lens wear requires more diligence with cleaning and care.

Disposable contact lenses were first released commercially in the 1980s. The first disposable lens was the Johnson and Johnson Acuvue contact lens, which was a 2 week disposable contact lens. It was a soft hydrogel lens and was primarily worn on a daily basis. The original Acuve contact lenses has only recently been discontinued. It was designed to be replaced after 2 weeks of daily wear.

Soft disposable silicon hydrogel contact lenses were first available in the 1990s. The first silicon hydrogel lenses offered were the B&L PureVision and Ciba Focus night & Day lens. Both these lenses are approved for one month extended wear. Silicon hydrogel contact lenses have the advantage of greater oxygen permeability then the original hydrogel contact lenses. Approximately 98% of patients are able to wear this type of contact lens. There is however, a slightly increased chance of developing microbial keratitis or corneal ulcer with this mode of wear. Some studies place the risk at one in five hundred per wearing year.

The next generation of silicon hydrogel soft disposable contact lenses saw the release of Ciba Optix O2 and Johnson and Johnson Acuvue Oasys. These lenses have an improved surface treatment, which leads to improved hydration and increased comfort.

More recently daily disposable soft hydrogel contact lenses have become increasingly popular. These lenses, such as J&J 1-day Acuvue Moist and CibaVision Focus Dailies have the advantage of being more hydrophilic and retaining moisture during the day.

Focus Dailies contact lenses contain AquaRelease to improve hydration and are replaced daily, leading to increased comfort from a cleaner lens. Daily replacement lenses also have the advantage of lower complication rates due to the lenses developing less surface deposits and lower infection rates. Obviously a contact lens case is superfluous with this mode of lens wear. Contact lens cases have been found to be a major source of microbes that can cause eye infections.

Contact lenses are now also available to buy online, meaning a faster, cheaper and more convenient alternative in purchasing your lenses. Contact lens wearers should still maintain a responsible attitude to lens wear, and have their eyes checked regularly by their eyecare practitioner. They should also check their own eyes daily for eye infections, by following the "Look OK, See OK, Feel OK" regime. Each morning after inserting the lenses they should check each eye look white, then check the vision in each eye separately, and then blink once or twice and ensure there is no discomfort. If there is any change, they should remove the lenses immediately and consult their eye care practitioner.

Ask the Eye Guys: Today's cataract surgery is more user-friendly
How did lens implants evolve? Today's cataract surgery represents a quantum leap in technology compared to that of 50 years ago. In the pre-lens implant era, a cataract was removed from the eye to allow a clear pathway for light to go to the retina.

Contact lens has become extremely popular these days. The reason is that people are becoming more and more conscious about the way they look. Most of the people who use glasses to correct their vision feel that the glasses are a hindrance in their good looks. More over the cost of contact lenses have reduced considerable in the recent times. Many renowned contact lens companies have reduced their contact lens prices, which have made them affordable for the common man.

One of the most well known brands is the Bausch And Lomb contact lens. The company has been offering variety of contact lenses since a along time. The soft Bausch And Lomb contact lenses are used by large number of lens users. The soft contact lenses have to be removed during the night as they partially block the oxygen flow to your cornea. For people who do not want to remove their lenses even during the night the company offers extended wear Bausch And Lomb contact lens. This lens allows around six times more oxygen than the normal contact lens and can be worn continuously for around thirty days.

For people who use the contact lens once in a while, the company offers one-day Bausch And Lomb contact lens. These lenses can be disposed off after single use. The doctors say that the daily disposable lenses are safest choice for lens users. Then there are toric Bausch And Lomb contact lenses made by the company for people who have a problem of astigmatism. The brand also offers colored Plano contact lenses for people who just want to change their eye color.

Rgp Contact Lens

You'll want to take simple precautions to make any lens purchase safe and effective. Before you buy contact lenses from anyone other than your eye care professional, it pays to be a wise consumer. There are 75 million contact lens wearers worldwide and 31 million in the U.S. alone.

Always buy from a reputable company; you can buy discount contact lenses without a prescription, but the company is selling you a prescription device as if it were an over-the-counter device, in violation of FTC regulations - selling you lenses without having a prescription from you. Among the many kinds of contact lenses you can buy are: novelty, colored, crazy, Halloween, special effects, theatrical, costume, scary, glow in the dark, wild eyes, mirrored, black, white, and red.

Soft lenses are easier to adjust and are much more comfortable than rigid lenses, because they conform to the eye and absorb and hold water. Although easier to handle and less likely to tear, rigid gas permeable lenses are not as comfortable initially as soft contacts and it may take a few weeks to get used to wearing the RGPs, compared to just a few days for soft contacts. There are also a few rigid gas permeable lenses that are designed and approved for overnight wear.

Rigid lenses generally give you more clear vision. The expiration date for your prescription is currently set by your state requiring a one-year or two-year renewal; if your state hasn't set a minimum expiration date, government regulation sets a one-year date unless your eye doctor determines there's a medical reason for less than one year. Rigid gas permeable lenses tend to be less expensive over the life of the lens since they last longer than soft lenses.

There are differences in the water content and shape of the lens between different brands. While the ability to hold water increases the oxygen permeability of soft lenses, it increases their fragility quotient as well. Rigid lenses don't absorb chemicals, unlike soft lenses which will soak up residue from your hands like soap or lotion.

The length of continuous lens wear depends on the lens type and your doctor's evaluation of your tolerance for overnight wear. Some doctors prescribe disposables as planned-replacement lenses, which are removed, disinfected, and reused before being discarded.

Check to see if you have a health insurance plan that includes vision coverage. Focus on value, not just the price; most people looking for the best price are really looking for the best value. Get a feel for how the retailer handles customer service calls; in case you have a problem after your order arrives.

Carefully check to make sure the company gives you the exact brand you ordered, the name of the lens, the power, sphere, cylinder, if any, axis, if any, diameter base curve, and peripheral curves, if any. Make sure you have a current, valid prescription when you order contact lenses. When you place your contact lens order, request the manufacturer's written patient information for your contact lenses; it'll give you important risk and benefit information as well as instructions for use.

Always ask what rebates are available. You can buy contact lenses from an eye doctor, on the Internet, from an optical store or a warehouse club. Ask about prices at your doctor's office when you have your eye examination, or during a follow-up visit after you get your prescription.

Extended-wear rigid lenses can cause unexpected, undesirable, reshaping of the cornea. The most serious safety concern with any contact lens is from overnight use. Getting a proper fit is essential; contact lenses that are poorly fitted can lead to eyesores, eye inflammation, and eye abrasions.

Soft extended-wear lenses bind down on the closed eye, but they are porous and allow some tears through during sleep; because they have so little form, their binding has very little effect on the shape of the eye. Don't wear lenses any longer than they're prescribed for, nor when sleeping unless you are otherwise directed. Daily-wear lenses are removed daily for cleaning and are a safer choice, provided they aren't worn during sleep.

If you're looking for cheap contact lenses, you may find that cheap materials or other ways of cutting costs will affect the quality you'll want for your precious eyes. Make sure to visit a reputable eye doctor for a complete eye examination once a year, or more frequently if needed. Laser surgery and its risks can be frightening and too expensive for some people; contacts can provide a safe, comfortable and time-tested alternative.

Retina detachment - Does anyone know if it is possible to get some kind of lasik eye surgery?

It has been almost 9 years since I had my retina partially detach and I don't like wearing glasses anymore, so I would like to get lasik eye surgery so I can get rid of the glasses. I wear contacts also.

It depends on how the detachment was treated. Sometimes, due to the prior interventions for the detachment, there's too much scarring to effectively complete the surgery. Aside from that, you should be good to go. Find a good, experienced doctor to evaluate you.

Contact Lens On Line

Most of the people who have contacts or glasses understand how important they are to their daily life. You just can't function without your eyesight, so if you need contacts or glasses, as a lot of people do, you aren't going to be able to do much good without them. However, contacts aren't just something that you can stick into your eyes. You need to have a good knowledge of what contacts are and what you need to do with them in order to help your eyesight be the best that it can be and in order to make sure that you don't damage your eyes further.

Remember that contacts can be very serious and tricky business. Make sure that you have enough contact lens solution at all times, and that you are changing it every day. Also be sure that you have the right kind of lens case, because lens cases can be very confusing and frustrating.

Another big thing is that you have to know what kind of lenses you have and what you can do with them. If you have night and day contacts, you can wear them all of the time, but if you don't have them, you need to take your contacts out every night because sleeping with them in can damage your eyes. Even if you have just color contacts or colored contacts that you've used for Halloween lenses that don't really do you any good, you still have to be sure that you are using them properly because even if they aren't used for eyesight they can still hurt your eyes if they aren't used the right way.

One of the big things that you can do is to analyze the brands and see what different brands have to offer you. If you have toric lenses from a place like Accuvue or Biomedicts, they are going to be different than disposable contacts from Bausch Laumb or Dialies, or Johnson and Johnson. Wessley Jessen has a line of cheap contacts as well, and Renu has contacts online also. You are always going to want to take a look at the different brands, such as Acuvue or Focus, and see what is different about them. Ciba vision is something that you also want to keep in mind when you are looking at different brands of contacts.

Lastly, it is always important that you consult an eye doctor before you order contacts online, even if you have a prescription. Your eye doctor who knows your eyes and your eyesight might have some good suggestions about brands of contact lenses or other things that you should keep in mind while you are searching for contacts online, and it might be a good idea to see what he has to say and to follow his advice.

Contact Lens Purchase

In many ways, all contact lenses are considered custom contact lenses, as they are made to fit specifically to the measurements of your eyes. Just as people come in all shapes and sizes, so do our eyes. Your optometrist will measure your vision needs and the amount of correction needed along with the size and shape of your pupils, cornea, and the degree of curvature of your eyes. Your prescription may fit into a ready-made contact lens that your doctor can order or your contact lenses may have to be custom-made.

Another category of custom contact lenses are the lenses that are used as prosthetic devices for people who have had catastrophic injuries to their eyes or who were born with pupil or cornea defects. These lenses are made to fit perfectly on the affected eye and have usually been painstakingly painted to match the color intricacies and depth of their natural eye. They are a valued addition to the field of eye prosthetics and make such a difference for the people who have suffered for many years with the disability.

In addition, another example of custom contact lenses is the fun or novelty lenses that come in a variety of colors and styles. These contact lenses were first used in the entertainment industry in television, movies and theater. Just as this industry can dictate hairstyles, fashion and shopping trends, it also made wearing novelty contact lenses something everyday people wanted to try.

There are custom contact lenses available in every color and design imaginable. You can purchase contact lenses that resemble cat's eyes or snake eyes. Are crazy about ladybugs; how about wearing ladybug custom contacts? You could even have your company's logo imprinted on your contact lenses to really impress your boss. These lenses can be worn everyday or for special occasions. You can make a tremendous statement to everyone you meet or just change to a more dramatic eye color. You have those options and more with contact lenses.

All contact lenses have become regulated and all are considered to be medical devices. Therefore, purchasing any contact lenses, even lenses that have no vision correction, will require a prescription from an eye doctor. Improper use or sharing of contact lenses can cause serious eye infections, injuries, or even blindness. Therefore, it is in your best interest to get proper instruction on them before you wear your custom contact lenses.
