Eye Surgery

For people with myopic or short-sighted, the prospect of having a perfect vision is certainly a dream come true. People with short sightedness problems would have probably at some time or other wondered about the benefits of having a lasik laser eye surgery to correct their vision.

Since the advent of lasik laser eye surgery, this dream is now a reality for millions of people all over the developed world. This article raises some dangers and side effects of this surgical procedure.

In the original version of the laser eye surgical procedure, the PRK, which is an acronym for photorefractive keratectomy, involves the complete removal of the cornea's outer layer to operate underneath it and later let it to grow back on its own.

However, with the lasik surgical procedure or laser in situ keratomileusis, eye surgeons can now peel back the cornea surface to operate underneath it and then return the cornea to its original position.

Now, the bad news about the surgery is that there can be some side effects and complications just like in any other surgeries. Some people who have had lasik eye surgery done have found that not only did their vision had not improved, but are seriously damaged by the eye surgery.

The surgery permanently changes the physiology and optics of the eyes. Therefore potential eye surgery patients should always be aware of the risk-benefit ratio and whether is it worth to risk the dangers and side effects to the eyes. The benefits are that you can do away with glasses or contact lenses, probably permanently. However, the risk of permanent damage to your vision can be palpable and alarming.

In a 'Review of Optometry' report, up to one in six patients who undergo lasik laser eye surgery end up with complications and side effects. This ratio is indeed alarming.

Complications and side effects arising from the lasik eye surgery include distortion of vision, such as irregular astigmatism, which cannot be corrected by eye glasses. Others experienced deterioration in the quality of their vision or very bad dry-eye side effects. Some very unfortunate patients have reported having double vision or even triple vision arising from a lasik laser eye surgery.

For patients who do not suffer any side effects, it is certainly an undoubted positive life changing experience. For example, Richard Branson of the Virgin fame or notoriety, is a huge fan of lasik laser eye surgery as the surgery has transformed him from being 'blind as a bat' to having an almost perfect vision. Till this day, he is still gushing praises on lasik laser eye surgery.

However, on the other hand, Margaret Dolan from Ireland is a victim of the surgical procedure went wrong. After her surgery, her eyes developed a complication known as Post-Lasik Dry Eye.

Margaret Dolan needs to add artificial tears to her eyes many times a day and throughout the night just to keep the eyes moist. Patients who suffer from this dry eye syndrome usually have the symptoms for about two to three months after their surgeries and then the symptoms will disappear.

However, for some very unfortunate people, their conditions do not improve with time and they need to drop artificial tears on their eyes for the rest of their lives. This can be very frustrating and distressing for the unfortunate victims.

So if you are considering a lasik laser eye surgery, do discuss the possible risks and complications that may arise from of the surgical procedure thoroughly with your eye surgeon and get as much information as you can before you reach a decision.

Refractive Eye Surgery

Any surgery that is performed for the improvement of the refractive state of the eye is called refractive eye surgery. The common objective of all refractive eye surgeries is to eliminate the need of wearing corrective eye glasses or lenses on the part of the patient.

Some common visual disorders that can be cured with refractive eye surgery include myopia and astigmatism. Due to the high prevalence of such eye diseases, a very high number of refractive eye surgeries are regularly performed in the United States and other parts of the world.

Methods of Refractive Eye Surgery
The process of this type of surgery involves remodeling the cornea of the eye. The most common technique in use these days involves an excimer lasers for reshaping of the curvature of the cornea. Some of the common methods of refractive eye surgery include:

* Flap Procedures: A blade called microkeratome is used in these surgeries to cut a flap of corneal tissue. Lasik or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is the most common example of this procedure which uses an excimer laser to target the desired tissue.

* Surface Procedures: Some common surgeries performed under this method include Photrefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelium Keratomileusis (LASEK). These surgeries also involve the use of laser, however they do not require making a cut into the stroma of the eye.
* Corneal Incision Procedures: Radial Keratotomy (RK) is an example of surgery using this method. In this method a diamond knife is used for correcting the shape of the cornea. This surgery is used to common problems of eye such as myopia and astigmatism are cured. However, this method is mostly being replaced by methods which use an excimer laser.

Precautions and Risks in Refractive Eye Surgery
It’s true that refractive eye surgery is a modern and efficient method of correcting vision defects, however it is not suitable for every one. If you are a victim of common diseases such as diabetes or glaucoma then the refractive surgery would not be suitable for you. You should also avoid this type of surgery if you are a pregnant or have certain eye diseases involving retina or cornea defects.

You could have come across eye centers touting outrageous offers of'20/20 vision or your money back'. The whole idea of 20/20 vision has been ballyhooed immensely when it comes to Eye Laser Surgery. Basically, the value 20/20 makes reference to a technique of measuring visual acuity thru the Snellen eye chart ? The same old alphabet chart that you may have seen at a nearby eye care center.
With the newest technical advancements in laser eye surgery, the conventional Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure has been enlarged with superlative techniques like wavefront LASIK, and its add-on, iris registration. With such enhancements there's an even larger chance of 20/20 vision relative to that with conventional LASIK. By using wavefront technology there's a great, around 95%, chance of 20/20 vision. However [*COMMA] with the iris registration technology, the chance of 20/20 vision skyrockets to an overpowering 99%.
20/20 vision is what you shoot for while undergoing any sort of refractive surgery ? It's used as a benchmark. However, some folk hold a somewhat dissenting opinion about 20/20 vision, so far as laser eye surgery is concerned. The argument put forth is that visible quality matters more than visible acuity. As is obvious from a number of cases, Eye Laser Surgery, for example LASIK, have potential issues. A patient might experience blurry vision, halos, spook vision or double vision, glare, and starbursts surrounding light sources at night.
Normal vision is crisp and pointy. But after Eye Laser Surgery, someone might have to handle enfeebling side-effects, which sometimes diminish vision quality. Though the patient might still be in a position to decipher a 20/20 line on the Snellen chart, the vision might be blurry.

In general, the degree of refractive error and the pupil size are the only criteria while determining the candidature of a patient for Eye Laser Surgery. The information important to such aspects is reasonably anecdotal.
If you find a LASIK surgery that you are confident with, you will be able to get additional information about 20/20 vision.

Can I have PRK eye surgery at 17??????

I have had glasses for 9 years give or take 1 or 2 years (I don't remember how old I was when I got them.). I am 16 and my prescription has been stable for a year so far. When I turn 17 it will have been stable for 2 years. Will I be able to have PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) when I am 17? I can't do LASIK because I want to join the US Army and LASIK can be undone by physical strain (the flap on your eye comes off) but PRK there is no flap so it can't come undone.

It is unlikely that you'll find a good surgeon to do corrective eye surgery at your age. You need to be in your twenties to make sure you and your eyes are done growing and changing. Since you're only 16, you' re still in the puberty age, which is when a person's age will get worse.

Corrective Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is the most commonly practiced procedure to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors, including myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness) and astigmatism (distorted vision when looking at objects at any distance).

There are different types of laser eye surgery. LASIK - laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis – is one of the most common. Many patients who have LASIK end up with 20/20 vision. But, like all medical procedures, it has both risks and benefits. Only your eye doctor can tell if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery.

Laser Eye Surgery for Laser Vision Correction, such as LASIK, Custom LASIK, PRK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK and other specialized LASIK Eye Surgery procedures offer those who have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism the possibility of freedom from the hassle of eyeglasses and contact lenses. This requires that patients participate in their care by becoming educated consumers as well as patients.

During laser eye surgery, a surgeon uses a laser device to make permanent changes to the shape of the cornea. The laser used most often is the Excimer laser, which produces a beam of ultraviolet light to vaporize tissue. Surgically altering the shape of the cornea can correct mild to moderate refractive errors in most people.

Laser Eye Surgery in general, the procedure itself, LASIK surgeons and their experience and education, practice locations, understanding the costs and potential risks and complications. Also, in order to make up to date information and current thoughts about Laser Eye Surgery procedures readily available, we have included a LASIK News & Updates section that will present selected summaries of noteworthy publications, case reports and research that might be useful in your overall personal education and decision process.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. In LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a second laser. The surgeon fold backs the flap, and then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A knife, called a microkeratome, is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middlesection of the cornea.

When the vast majority of patients seriously consider Laser Eye Surgery it is common to encounter a number of different personal reasons why they do not wish to proceed. Usually these reasons can be separated into two categories-fear and cost.

PRK Laser Eye Surgery

PRK is a laser eye surgery procedure that treats nearsightedness, mild to moderate farsightedness and astigmatism by flattening the center of the cornea with cool beams of ultraviolet light. Based on the patient’s individual refraction, the computer generates an accommodating amount of laser light to remove a calculated amount of corneal tissue.

The laser eye surgeon uses an excimer laser to remove tissue from the surface of the cornea, allowing the cornea to focus light correctly. For nearsighted people, the doctor will perform PRK to flatten the too-steep cornea. For farsighted people, the doctor will use the laser to create a steeper cornea. Following PRK, vision begins to improve around three days following the treatment and steadily improves.

While there are many improvements in the medical field, one thing that still could use a little help is lasik eye surgery because if you come out with a lasik eye surgery problem, you could be looking at a lifetime of issues. For most people, being able to wake up in the morning without having to stumble for their glasses would be wonderful. And for those who struggle with contacts, the day of no longer needing them would be a blessing. But as with everything in the medical field there are risks involved and you could very well end up being one of the few who come out with a lasik eye surgery problem.

To make one thing clear there are thousands of people getting this procedure done every single week and most come out with no problems and love the results that they got. But for the few that come home with a lasik eye surgery problem it is the most terrible mistake of their lives. The main problem that occurs is loss of vision. This can range anywhere from slight vision loss to complete blindness and this issues are nonreversible and terrible to deal with.

How To Prevent It

First thing first, be careful of who you go to and remember that you normally get what you pay for. If the payment price sounds a little too good to be true, you may be on to something and you better stay away. You want to make sure that you are going to a trusted and well-respected member of the vision field so that you are not one of the ones who come home with a lasik eye surgery problem. If you are unsure of the doctor you are considering, do some research and see what you can find.

Search the Internet to see if anyone is reporting problems with this particular doctor. Talk with friends and family and try to see if you know people who have gone through this procedure before. If they have and they had a great experience ask them where they went. Make sure that the doctor and the vision center has a great deal of experience in this procedure in order to steer clear of any lasik eye surgery problem. Remember, it is your responsibility to watch out for your own well being so make sure that you are preventing yourself from getting any complications.

Laser Surgery For Eyes

If, like many folks that suffer from imperfect vision, you have had enough of breaking your glasses or losing your contact lenses, then you could have considered undergoing laser eye treatment. Offering you the likelihood to improve your quality of life, as well as giving you more liberty, it is becoming an increasingly common process to have.

A huge proportion of folk worldwide have already chose laser vision correction. According to the sworn statements, it's not only served to enhance the patients' vision, but has also supplied them with more independence and confidence in life. how does it work and what are the different treatments available?

fundamentally, the process is open to those folks that have acute short or long-sightedness, or astigmatism - this where your cornea is an oval rather than spherical shape, meaning pictures are blurred at most distances.

Your optician will be able to determine whether you must endure laser eye treatment. If they think this is the case, then most procedures can be carried out very quickly and efficiently, and are performed using a local analgesic.

Generally speaking, there are 2 types of laser surgery available ; LASEK ( Laser-Assisted-Epithelial Keratomileusis ) and LASIK ( Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis ). Each process is carried out while the patient is awake ; eye drops are applied to numb the eye.

With LASEK laser eye treatment the top layer of the cornea, the epithelium, is removed before an excimer laser is used to re-sculpt the cornea. Once this is finished, the surgeon then replaces the epithelium on the eye's surface. To keep it in place a soft contact lens is inserted, which must be kept in for some days after the treatment.

LASIK eye treatment, on the other hand, is the most frequently executed procedure worldwide and is OK for a wide number of folk. Time sensible, it's also highly efficient since it is possible for both eyes to be treated at the same time, whilst it will only take around ten to fifteen mins to finish. Patients have in addition reported less discomfort following the treatment compared to other sorts of laser surgery.

The difference between LASIK eye surgery and LASEK is the previous doesn't remove the epithelium, but instead creates a flap using precise cutting techniques. And, once the laser treatment has been finished, the flat is just replaced, which helps it to heal more naturally.

if you're looking a change from wearing glasses, or need to avoid wasting time putting in your contact lenses every day, then it may be worth considering laser eye treatment. Testimony to its success, a{ very lar| hu| giant proportion of people have experienced the treatment, with many stating that they wish they had done so earlier.

Article Source: ArticlesBase.com - A Brief Look at Eye Laser Surgery

Is there a maximum prescription/power you can go up to to have Laser eye surgery?

I want to have Laser eye surgery but I'm not sure if there is a certain power you have to be under to get eye surgery. Can your eyes be so high that you can't get it? Or does that not matter?

Please help!

Hi,

Different laser platforms and companies have different parameters over what they can and will treat. Prescription is by no means the only factor to consider in ones suitability for treatment. You can have have a small prescription of -1.00 and be unsuitable.

However, from a purely prescriptive point of view I have found the following lasers capable of accurately treating prescriptions as follows:

Allegretto Wavelight : From +8.00 to -16.00, up to -8.00 astigmatism
VISX Star 4 : From +2.00 to -9.00, up to -4.00 astigmaitsm
B&L : I have not worked with, I understand to have slightly better capabilities than the VISX.

Most high street companies will not be looking at treating much more than -9.00 sphere, -3.00 astigmatism or more than +2.50 (if at all).

So yes your prescription could be too high to have laser, however, there are further options including ICL or Phaco IOL treatment depending on your age, suitability etc. Ultimately, until such time as you have been fully consulted, you cannot be given a clear answer.

Visit www.lasik-eyes.co.uk, go for a few consultations and you will have a much better idea of what is and isn't possible. (Do yourself a favour and avoid Optical Express, Ultralase and Optimax - high street providers of rubbish).

Cheers

Correction surgery for your eyes is an option today with a new technique called Lasik. Often times, your vision can be returned to 20/20 or better with laser eye surgery. But the question is will your insurance agency help you cover the cost. If you have vision insurance, you may call or write or check your policy to find out if you're already covered for a discount or help from your insurance agency for lasik eye surgery. After all, your vision insurance will no longer have to supply glasses, contact lens or replacements, and therefore may cover.

Remember, an insurance agents job is to sell insurance, and if you have lasik surgery, there's a possibility that they are going to lose your insurance premium. So, perhaps, according to your insurance policy you may not be covered

Lasik surgery is not an inexpensive plan and although you'll see plenty of advertisements at $500 an eye, the reality is it's closer to $2000 and up according to your eyes. A because it's advertised at a discount price doesn't mean that the lasik surgery specialist is the best in the process, and when it comes to your eyes, you want the best. It's important that not only is your Lasik surgery affordable, but also that you have a qualified doctor with qualified machinery to actually do the surgery itself. The benefits of having 20/20 eye vision, and of course not having to wear glasses or contacts is one of the biggest.

When you see a good price for lasik surgery be sure to check out the doctor thoroughly as well as find out from other patients whether they're happy with the laser eye surgery. Although in most cases a cheaper doctor means less experience, there are times when you'll find discounted deals from a well qualified doctor's office or surgery. Y'all so want to look into employee discounts, club member discounts, and other discounts the laser surgery office offers.

There are different countries with vision insurance policies that will cover Lasik surgery. It's important before working with any elective eye surgery that you find out whether you're covered or not. You may find that traveling over the border saves you a ton of money in certain areas where Lasik surgery is either cheaper, or covered by insurance.

Many doctors will offer a payment plan on your laser eye surgery. Before embarking on any surgery procedure it's important to know where your financial obligations lie, whether it's elective not. Lasik eye surgery is an option for most people with vision problems and to return your vision 20/20, become an informed laser eye surgery prospect by researching before your first Lasik appointment.

LASIK Surgery Question?

I am considering doing laser eye surgery in April and have been visiting various places...most places quote me prices around $5000...one place though which is located in the financial district of Toronto, Canada where I live offeres surgery from as low as $ 500 an eye (place is called LASIK MD)...i find that a little troubling...they say they offer it this low because of the sheer volume that they do and they can afford to offer it this low...im just wondering what to do?

I've heard this too. Remember the cheaper is not necessarily better, especially when it comes to something as important as your eyesight.

I saw deals in my local area for $500 per eye, but I went to TLC Vision to get it done and it was about $4600.

Surgery of eye takes very less time. Laser rays burn the tissue around your eye’s cornea .When this tissue is removed, the laser then reshapes the cornea. Excimer is high quality and high precision laser used in laser eye surgery. When the burned tissues is removed, then the light rays will be refracted properly and fall on the retina of the eyes. Then your vision will increase. Vision correction problem can be solved up to more extent.

For every other person it is reshaped in different way. You couldn’t find any simpler way to correct eye vision than this eye surgery.
