Ask your eye doctor if the drops he or she uses during your exams contain thimerosal or not. Some eye drops contain this preservative (it keeps fungi from growing in the solutions over time), but others don't. It can be irritating to some people but not really harmful. And by the way, slit lamp exams are not harmful.

I wear night and day contacts but often get allergic reactions in my eyes (to basically everything). I wonder if your best bet would be something systemic, as in a tablet that is swallowed, rather than a topical drug such as drops. From what I can gather, your contact lenses are soft lenses, and one has to be extremely careful what kind of drops are used is wearing soft lenses. The preservatives in many eye drops stick to the inner surface of the lens, and the lens then acts as a toxic reservoir which can do serious damage to eyes.

Perhaps you should talk to your ophthalmologist to see if there are any suitable eye drops for you, or if an antihistamine tablet may be more suitable.
